One day net doesnt work, next day it does...

Hey. I live in canada and have Rogers high speed internet. Yesterday morning I was surfing without problems. I came home from work and the net stopped working. Wouldnt give IP because it said media is disconnected, but im 100% positive all calbes were in properly. So i left it alone all night and turned it on this morning and it works without touching any cable. I called tech support (Rogers, not here and they said i have a bad nic card. Im so confused as to how this happned. One day net doesnt work, next day it does. Strange. Please respond because Im afraid that the nic card will "play dead" in the middle of the week and I wont be able to get to work and pick up a new. Sorry about the essay style post.

I can't determine which is the cause, but it could easily be one of 3 things.

If I remember correct Rogers is a Cable ISP.

So the simpliest connection would be Cable modem, Network Cable to PC Ethernet.

Media disconnect is a lose of communication between the Cable modem and the PC.
hints, could be Cable modem, Network Cable or the NIC.

Even if the Cable modem is reporting on it's lights it is connected to the cable, it may have a bad ethernet port, The cable could have a bad spot on it, or even your NIC may be dying.

Sorry I can't pin it down, but I want to make it clear it could be any of the 3.

Cause if you break the link between the PC and the cable modem by removing the network cable at the cable modem, the NIC will report Media disconnected.
