internet network problems

I have been using my current network setup with no problems for some time now. A few days ago my internet cut out and I couldn't get it to work. My network is setup with a router to which my main computer is hard wired to with ethernet and then a wireless connection to a computer downstairs. If I connect my computer directly to the modem the internet does work on my computer, but when I go through the router it does'nt work. Also the wireless connection on the other computer says it has a strong signal and is connected, but any attempt to use the internet fails.

Have you rebooted the router? Unplug its power cord for a minute and plug it back in.

yes

yes I tried this already and did it again after, but still the same problems. If my computer is directly connected it gets the internet no problem, but through the router nothing works, and the wireless doesn't work either.

It's a router problem. If rebooting it doesn't fix it, try updating its firmware and doing a hard reset - this will require reconfiguration. If this still doesn't fix it, replace the router.

Well half the problem is fixed... the internet on the main computer can work through the router, but not like I had it configured before. If I plug the modem connection into the WAN port and my computer connection into one of the four remaining ports I get no internet connection, but if I connect the modem to one of the four ports other than the WAN, then connect my computer to the second port I do get the internet connection on my computer.

However my wireless network is still not working. The computer with wireless says it's connected and has a strong signal, but any attempt to connect to the internet fails.

Let me give you a few items if you are using cable.

First off I use cable internet Comcast, with an Toshiba modem, followed by a linksys router.

I am not going into Details, but based on a few things I have noticed over the years I have a few things for you to try.

Ok, lets touch on the issue of the net only working with the modem is connected to the Lan port but not the Wlan port.

Cable modems work on and bind if you will to Mac address.

Turn off and unplug your cable modem for 5 minutes. Also turn off your router.

Turn the Cable modem back on, wait for it to Sync up to your provider.

Now connect the ethernet from the cable modem to the Wlan port on your Router.
Turn on the router, wait for it to power up.

Use your wired PC to surf into the router and configure it if needed. See if you can get to the internet.

Now, your Wireless computer, have you checked to see if it is getting an IP address. I noticed you said it has a strong Signal. Please check IP address.

If it has an IP address, try to connect to the router by the router's default IP address.

(reason, I believe if the cable if connected to your router on the Lan port, your router is turned into a switch and your connection is not shared on a switch, which is one reason why the wireless would not work correctly)

Cable modems have a habit of learning the mac address of the next device they connect to, that is why turning off and unplugging the cable modem for 5 minutes is important.
