Pissed Limited or no connection/ Router screwed up

Help!!

I was in my router configuration settings and I tried to forward a 2 ports. I've done this before and when I was finished it said I had to reboot the configuration page so I pressed OK. BIG MISTAKE! After this the computer started lagging and it disconnected me from the wireless network connection. I've had this happen to me before so I just pressed Repair and usually it goes back to it's usual self. This time it disabled/enabled the WIFI card and it tried to renew the IP address. The computer could not renew the IP address and after a while it said that there was limited or no connection.

I thought, hmmm must be the wireless lan so I connected it via the ethernet cable. Same thing again, limited or no connection.

Now I thought, hmmm must be the router then and I asked my mom and she said that the internet was working fine with her computer which is connected with an ethernet cable to the router.

Then I reset the router to the factory settings but I still got limited or no connectivity and now it said the same thing on my mom's computer.

Then I connected my computer to the modem directly with an ethernet cable and voila the same thing happened again: Limited or no connectivity. I connected my moms computer directly to the modem and it works...so after alot of gutwrenching and thinking how I was gonna get out of this situation the easiest I decided to write about my problem here at PC Mech Hopefully somebody can help me. The support that LevelOne gave me was really bad and I hope somebody can shed some light

Specs:

Router- Level One MDR 3404TX 54Mbs Wireless router
My computer- MS Windows Media Center Edition 2005, Level One 802.11G WIFI card
Mom's computer-MS Windows PRO

I assume you've tried rebooting your computer already -- if so, I would do a spyware check and possibly use WinsockXPFix. The reason your mom's computer can no longer connect wirelessly is that when you reset the settings, it lost all the wireless configuration. You will have to re-enter the settings and then try connecting via your mom's wireless.

Allright, I'll give it a try. Is WinsockXPFix a program that you use for spyware?

No, it's a network-setting-fixing utility. It can be used to repair damage caused by spyware, though. To remove spyware I would recommend Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta and Ad-Aware SE Personal.

I ran both, found nothing and I tried TrojanHunter to see if I had any trojans that could be causing a problem and it found nothing either.

I'm going to go to the store and exchange my router for a new one because these days w/o internet are killing me!!

I would be more inclined to think that this is a problem with the settings on your computer if your mom can conect just fine.

Looks like her computer will NOT connect through the router any more - just direct to modem.

Okay, i misread that... I was thinking that it would connect via the wired part of the router but not wirelessly. So yeah, a router exchange would probably be the best route. But it wouldn't necesarily fix the problem on your computer (although, of course, it might -- there's no telling unless you do it!).

Allright, I ran WinsockXPfix and it did nothing. I'm thinking of either:

fresh reinstall of XP (I wouldn't really want to do this)

talk to HP support (the two times I've tried to use them they really didn't know what I was talking about and told me some obvious solutions to my problems as if I was some sort of n00b )

turning it in to some local computer repair shop (i'm not sure if they have anything that could help my situation. Maybe I could tell them that they'd only get paid if they fixed the problem ).

I looked on HP support for new drivers and the only thing they had was a mobo BIOS update. I'm not really sure if this would help my problem.

Suggestions???

Well this didn't work. Now I'm seriously thinking of reformatting and reinstalling Windows.

Allright, after much despair and trying to find a HDD to store all my files on, I'm currently reformatting. The router is working again with another computer so now I just have to wait for the format to finish

I've reformatted and everything and it still wouldnt connect to the ethernet cable but it did connect to the wireless. After I made a new user I switched users and it says that the IP cannot be renewed. I have no idea what to do now. I'm thinking it's either a hardware failure or a picky OS.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me, too.
