Adding a hub.
I am running an internet network connection with 2 computers tied in through a router. The router is next to one of the computers and the other is hardwired from about 80 feet.
My question is this can I add a powered or nonpowered hub into the system somewhere in the eighty feet hardwire so I can run an xbox online? The connection itself would be no problem as the distance from the computer to the xbox is very short. Thank you for any help you can give.

Sure, you can use a Switch. I don't recommend hubs as they only allow one device access at a time. You can have several devices on a HUB, but the way a hub works, you would get packet lose for gaming, A switch on the other hand allows more devices to work at the same instance.
With a switch, just connect one of the ports on the router to the uplink on the switch, then the switch to other network devices.

Byte 2.0 Thank you for your reply. I will probably get a switch if only because of the packet lose as I am the only end user of both this computer and the xbox and they won't be online at the same time. The only reasons I asked about the hub was because I have one and I didn't know about other ways to make the connection.
Thanks again for your help. |

Well, if you have a hub already, you can try it. It might be good enough for your needs, since the PC and xbox won't be in use at the same time. They could be in use at the same time but then there would be extra ping times.
I was looking at if you have to buy one, buy a switch instead of a hub. |
