Easy way - run the Network Wizard on each machine making sure you use the same Workgroup name for both and separate names for each computer. Then right click on the file you want to share and select Sharing. Set it to be Shared (and changed if you wish). You'll probably have to restart each machine in the process. Then click on My Network Places and you should see all the Shared files on your network.

Click Start and it should be seen right under My Computer. If it's not there, right click on the Task Bar at the bottom of your page/properties/start menu/Customize button/Advanced tab/check Network Places. Back out and it should show up on the start menu.

you can right click the start button and choose explore. then in the windows tree on the left side labeled the "folders" pane, scroll all the way down and you should see my network places. click the + sign to expand network places. next click the + sign for microsoft windows network, then select your workgroup and the pc. your folder should be there.

do you have both pcs set to the same workgroup? you can check by clicking start>right click my computer and go to properties> in system properties window click on the computer name tab click the change button to view and or change your workgroup name on each pc to be the same. you will have to restart each pcs before the change will take effect.....
do you have folders set up to be shared over the network on each pc? right click on the folder you want to share and select sharing and security, check share this folder give it a name. after you share it you should see a hand on the folder. double check your settings on each pc to to make sure they are automatically searching for network folders and printer. you can check these settings by right clicking the start button> click explore>then click tools>folder options>click the view tab and the make sure the first option is checked. are you able to see the other pc in my network places but not the folder that is being shared out? |

What are the IP addresses of both the computers? How are they assigned (permanently or DHCP)? Can you ping one computer from the other? Under your network connection properties, do you have "Client for Microsoft Windows" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" checked?

Not sure but I am using a D-LInk 604 router, does that have anything to do with it. Also the client for MS windows and printer sharing is checked on both computers, and I cant ping the other computer from mine or the other computer cant ping mine

If you can't ping the other computer, then the problem is at a lower level of network connectivity. You are pinging by IP address, right? Can both computers access the internet?

do u have any firewalls running on these pcs? if so disable the firewalls since your router already has a hardware firewall, and see if both pcs can ping each other.
if u have win xp firewall which is included SP1 and SP2 turned on, turn it off by going into the control panel. if you have SP1, click on network connections select your local area connection, right click and select properties. selected the advanced tab, and turn it off. if you have SP2, then click the security center icon in the control panel. under manage security settings for select windows firewall and turn it off if you have mcafee, or zonealarm, or norton, etc, disable those by right clicking the icon on the bottom right corner of your screen what are your ip address for each pc? do u have your network adapters set to dhcp or static(manually type in the ip settings) |

One is 192.68.0.101, and the other is 192.168.0.100. And now when I disable Windows firewall and Norton firewall my D-Link router shows up under My network places

The names of the pcs still dont show up, the IPs are asigned by the router. My router shows up but all it does when you click on it is take me to the configuration wizard in the router. I still cant share files

so on the pc named tech-gaa587246a click the start button>right click my network places>select search for computers. type in the name of the other pc that you are trying to locate and search your network. are you able to ping the other pc's ip address and get replies now that u have disabled all of the firewalls? type this: ping -t 192.168.1.xxx "x" represents where you would put the last 3 digits of the pc's ip address you r trying to communicate with. so for the ips u listed you would type ping -t 192.168.1.100.
