Westell 2200 with linksys router help
Hello, I have a westell 2200 dsl modem and a linksys BEFW11S4 router with 4 ethernet ports built in.
I've been having problems with them and have done a little research. I've come to the conclusion that it'd be best to just set my westell 2200 to DMZ and have it perform as a modem only and let the linksys do all the routing/firewall stuff. Except, I can't seem to find out how to set the westell to DMZ. Does anyone know how to do this? |

ok, do this.
Hit the reset switch on the back of the westell Then let it power backup, turn on the linksys. Surf into the Linksys router and setup a PPPoE connection and never look back. I used to support this modem when I worked for Bellsouth tech support. I love the westell, but by all means let the linksys do all the routing. Resetting the westell in short puts the westell in a bridge mode, in effect turning into a modem only. Of course most tech support won't help with that setup, but many of us did, before our jobs where outsourced.

Aha! you seem to be just the person I need to speak with . lol.
Ok, in that case, I think the Westell is already set that way. So it's something else that's causing the problems. What it is is I have two computers running off the linksys which is connected to the westell 2200 which goes out to the internet. I was given these instructions to set up my connection type 192.168.1.1 then in vc config set protocol to bridge and bridge type to bridge. then set dhcp config to dhcp server from private LAN=off then plug in the router and type 192.168.1.1 and set the connection type to pppoe. (saving at each screen of course) Now I play Starfleet Command 3 a lot as well as other internet games, and since I got the linksys router I have been unable to connect to any of them. Any suggestions? I've been told I need to open ports 47624 2300~2400 6500 How do I do this? |

ok, based on what you said, the westell is already in a bridge.
Correct there are 2 ways to bridge one, the way you did and the way I explained, we always used the quick easy at work. Ok, these ports you need to open are in the Linksys at this point. Give me a moment, going to check a few things in my linksys, different model but some should be the same. |

Ok, right now, 192.168.1.1 should be taking you to the linksys setup page.
Find Status and look for an IP address, it should start with something like 65 or 66 or something like that. If the IP address starts wtih a 172 or 192 then the westell is not truly bridged. If the westell is bridged correctly the Real IP from your provider will be feed to the Linksys. First check the IP address of the computer you are going to game on, like 192.168.1.100. Provided the Westell is bridged correctly and the Linksys is controlling things, there should be an option in your linksys router for application and gaming. In here you can forward the ports you need to the IP address of your gaming computer. Mind the fact that my linksys router is a different model and things will probably be somewhat different. As you forward the ports, it will probably ask if you want TCP or UDP or Both. I am pretty sure your games would use TCP but you will probably want to chose both if that is an option on yours. |

ok, here is the set of screenies of my setup. There are three of them from the westell 2200 and two from the linksys main setup screen.
There was one not included, it simply was an option to turn DHCP Server "on" or "off" Anyone make heads or tails of them? |

ok, that last one, appears to indicate the westell must be bridged because that is the real IP address.
Now you should be able to go into the application and Gaming and put in the ports you need open for your games. |

It worked.
The Modem is bridged, the router is protecting, and I can still play my game and chat with AIM. I've been on three different tech forums with this problem and you got it within a few mins. lmao. Thank you! |
