VPN Problem

I am having some trouble connecting to the VPN running on one of my servers. It works fine if I connect internally using the servers internal IP, but when I connect from outside it doesn't work. I made sure to forward port 1723 to the server. That is the correct port for PPTP, right? Are there any other ports that should be forwarded?

Thanks in advance.

depends on the VPN server, Some require 2 ports, one for incoming and another for outgoing.

I tried to search on the web to help someone a couples days ago. Post back and let us know which VPN server it is. someone may have the answer.

It is the built in Microsoft VPN server. I tried doing a search too, but didn't find much. I did find this though. The only port they show is port 1723.

Thanks again.

I've been trying to set a VPN server up as well and in my router config there are options for PPTP & L2TP/IPSec PassThrough. I have gotten it to work internally but haven't tried it from another computer outside my network yet. I think you need that passthrough option b/c the ports are somewhat dynamic and change/jump around. I have 1723 forwarded as well and places I've read say something about forwarding IP 47, NOT the ip port 47 just ip 47... whatever that means. I guess Cisco routers can do this but not ones for home. But most places I look it says just port 1723.

AH ha, look at the bottom of the M$ article, you must enable IP protocol 47 (GRE). I think that is the key why we can't do this. Sorry 4 the long post, but together we will find the answer

You don't forward port 47, you have to enable IP Protocol 47 (GRE), although I'm not quite sure what to do for that. Any ideas?

Looks like we need a Cisco router. What kind of router you have and how far can you get in the logon process? I get to username/pswd and have a linksys. I'm gonna try DMZ b/c it looks like a firewall problem.

Answer

Microsoft uses IP Protocol 47 [GRE] for this secure tunnel. Provided that the PPTP Pass Through is set to Enable on the Router's Filters page and port 1723 is forwarded to the VPN Server, the Router will allow authentication and remote access into your network.

The router will also allow you access remote PPtP networks from behind the router providing the PPtP Passthrough is enabled on the router.

SO there ya go. I really need to try this off my local network b/c I'm thinking that may be causing the problems. I'll let ya know. Keep trying and let me know how it goes.

I got it up and working. It was a problem with the router.

One other thing though. I have the VPN server set up on IP 192.168.1.200, but once somebody connects, it creates another IP, 192.168.1.150 which is in the range of IPs I set aside for VPN clients. So after someone connects, it shows up as using IP 192.168.1.200 and 192.168.1.150. Is there any way to get the server to use its original IP instead of creating a new one?

Thanks again.

How are you reading these ip's? You are saying the server has 2 Ip's? And are you using the built in DHCP function or pointing to a DHCP server on the network(which can be the same server)? And what did you do to your router to make it work?

I'm using UltraVNC so it shows me my IP in the taskbar, but I'm sure it would show it from ipconfig.

When I set up the server, I chose to have it use IPs 192.168.1.150 to 192.168.1.199 and not to use DHCP. So is there any way you know of to have the server use its original IP instead of creating a new one?

In "general" if you right click on your adapter and go to properties and the configuration tab, is it set to dhcp or manually entered. I have mine manually entered.

What exactly did you do to your router b/c I'm still getting hung up there?
