Question Sonicwall/WRT54G networking issues

Okay, I'm going to try and be as clear as possible, but my head still hurts from trying to figure this out, so please bear with me...

A friend of mine wanted Wireless for his laptop, so I hooked him up at home no problem. Then, he decided he wanted wireless for the store he runs, so he went and bought himself another Linksys WRT54G and had me hook him up.

Now, the set up they have over there (not done by me) is:

Internet-->DSL Modem-->Sonicwall-->Switch-->PCs.

So I hooked up the WRT54G to the Sonicwall, did the config thing, and presto, I'm surfing wireless at his workplace. Happy as Larry, off I go.

Problem: He can't seem to access his security cameras (Dedicated Micros ) with either the internal (192.168...) or external IP address. It works fine from his house (saw it for myself), but not at work.

So I come back, hunker down with the laptop and one of the office PCs, install Look@lan on both machines to see what's going on, and by the looks of things, all is not well. On the laptop, all I can see is the laptop and the router, and on the PC, I see everything else, but not the router or laptop.

Now, the office is setup totally static, so I figure I just need to be a little more choosy with my IP addresses, but still no luck. Anyway, the in-place wired network looks something like this:

192.168.1.250 SonicWall
192.168.1.1 to 16 Office PCs
192.168.1.252 Dedicated Micros CCTV controller. This is setup in the SonicWall specially as attached to a separate static IP address.

The subnet is 255.255.255.0

So ultimately, I set up the Router with 192.168.1.120 and the laptop has .121, same subnetas the SonicWall. I put in the SonicWall IP as the gateway address in the linksys settings. I also changed the Router mode in the 54G from Gateway to Router. Also, the correct ports are forwarded for the CCTV in the linksys and the SonicWall, but the networks still can't see each other, and I still can't access the cameras, internally or externally.

Now, I know nothing about Sonicwall (and less after skimming through its settings), and I'm no networking guru. I know there's got to be some way to get this to work, I just don't know it. I'm kinda guessing they should have their own subnet, but I have no idea how to work that with the SonicWall. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Get rid of the router at the office and replace it with a wireless access point connected into the switch. You already have one device providing NAT and adding a second one will cause a lot of headaches.

I recommend a WAP54G. Its default IP just happens to be 192.168.1.251 so it looks like it will fit right in.

Yeah, I might be able to swap out the router for an access point, as I just found myself in need of one, and the prices are the same...

But, I would have thought proper configuration of both devices would have yielded the desired results, I'm just not sure how. Speaking of which, I tried the router at 192.168.1.253 and that didn't work either, so I'm not sure the AP at .251 would be any good.

Anyone else have any ideas?

The problem is the router is a NAT device. An AP is not, it's just another device on your network with a single static IP. The setup is ridiculously simple - you plug it into the switch and run the setup CD on any computer on the network, it will go out and find it (regardless of IP) and let you set its IP to anything you want.

Ah, ok. I thought changing the mode from Router to Gateway took care of that.

Thanks for the help.
