splat Problematic Wireless Connections

I have a cable internet connection at home and it is connected to a Netgear FWG114P wireless router. I have one computer connected via wire to the router and another in the room connected via wireless connection.

The computer in the room uses Wireless connection and I have a Netgear PCI wireless adaptor (WG311). But my wireless connection is not consistent and gets disconnected from time to time. I have recently crimped a low loss cable so I can detached the antenna from the back of my PCI card to the top of my computer so it is not blocked by any other peripherals. I have also placed a curved aluminium plate at the back of the antenna. This have improved my consistency by about 20 mins before it gets d/c again. I have tried using all the channels in the router but the connection is still unreliable. I also have downloaded the latest drivers and firmware for the PCI adaptor.

I have read from certain sites saying that the Netgear PCI adaptor is unreliable. Is that true? How can I improve my connection? My house also has a problem because I live up on the 25th storey. I can't even receive my handphone reception properly meaning I only can answer my calls either in the kitchen or near a window in my house. But I have previously used a linksys 802.11b wireless router and a USB adaptor with no problems at all. There are other connections around mine but the signal in the room always show that I have full signal strength from my router. What is the problem? Please advise! Thank You!!

Should I change the network adaptor or should I get a stronger antenna?

My PC with the wireless network is a PIII 800Mhz, 512MB Ram, running XP Professional SP2.

How frequent a timeframe is your router renewing IP leases? If the timeframe is too short you may be loosing your connection when DHCP IP addressing leases are renewed.

Is your cordless phone a 2.4Ghz phone? I have heard that this frequency plays havoc with wireless signals.

i have the netgear wireless WG311, and i had the same problem with it being inconsistent and always disconnecting. all i did to fix the problem was uninstall the netgear wireless management utility that came with the network card and the drivers, and then i reinstalled just the driver portion again and used the windows wireless management utility to run the wireless nic card. never had a problem since then
