Holy Mother of all that is sacred!

I make my own LAN cables but I think I would just go BUY a crossover cable instead of trying to decipher that!!!

That made my head hurt. I think I need to go lay down now....

Not hard, you just swap the pair in pos 3,6 with pair in pos 1,2 on one end of the cable but if you don't know the standard positions to begin with, and Milkman If you don't already have the crimp tool, it isn't worth buying one just to make one cable, because after you buy the tool, some rj45 ends and a box of cable you'll have quite a chunk of cash out just for 1 cable.. Probably much easier to but 1...

Crossover cables are dirt cheap at Newegg - in fact, the shipping is more expensive than the cable itself. You WILL be ripped off if you buy one at Best Buy or CompUSA - their markup on cables is ridiculous.

According to the diaghram on that web page you have to crossover both ends. Is that right or does my head still hurt? I have the crimper, ends and about 300' of CAT 5e so that wouldn't be an issue. I still would go buy a crossover cable or order one from Newegg, MWave or Ebuyer.

Just crossover one end and terminate the other as a straight-thru.

Interesting - but yes you can cross the wires anywhere in the cable makes no difference if it as the extreme end or not.

Splicing a CAT 5 is going to introduce noise and cause problems. Pitch the cable or make 2 smaller ones out of it (with the right ends and a crimping tool).

Your head still hurts, your looking at the top part which explains how data transfer works in a normal situation, my transmit links up to your receive and visa versa, so essentialy the crossover is being done at each end, which works great till you try to hook 2 similar devices like NIC card to nic card, then you cross 1 end of your cable to acheave the same results, my transmit linking in to your receive side and visa versa..

Hello People, fooling around with a network in my home house is prewired ,cat5. I have checked and rechecked cables from the router to the wall jack ,and checked the color codes and pin numbers on the wall jacks to the main distribution box in the basement. The wires in the box in the basement are blue to blue ,green to green etc. The problem is I connect the router to the RJ45 wall jack and if I plug in a lap top in any of the wall jacks through the hose NADA !!!" netwok cable unplugged " is the message. . The runs from one jack to another is about 100 feet ,could that be the problem. Nothing in the box in the base ment except cables and terminal strips ,all connection and colors are solid. no mistakes....HELP !!!!

Data is 1 to 1, home run wiring, not looped or bridged, you need to be plugging the router port into the other end of the same wire that you are plugging in your laptop into..

Sorry but from your post it's hard to decern what you are really plugging into what because you state you are plugging in the router to rj45 wall jack. How are the equipment room end of the jacks marked marked so you know which is which when you go to the PC end?? You aren't using the wan port on the router are you??? Are you sure the LAN port on the laptop is enabled and in good working order??? So you are plugging a LAN port of the router to the end of a wire down in the basement on the distribution panel, then going to the other end of that wire and plugging in the laptop??? If so then I suspect the lan port of the laptop is not in proper working order cause you should at least get link lights on the switch port on the router and the laptops' lan card, and NO you do not use a crossover cable for this application to work.. That could also be the trouble if you do have a crossover cable in the mix, then you need to get rid of it and get a straight thru cable all the way through..

No cross over cable , and the laptop works fine when I plug a cat5 cable from the router to the lap top.

1. From the cable modem,cat5 to input on router
2. One output of router to computer (main)
3. second output of router to test computer (builds etc.)
3. third output to a wall jack RJ45(color and pins checked)
4. That RJ45 cable goes to a main pannel in my basement
5. that cable goes to a terminal strip
6. Another cable is on that same terminal strip (bus)
7. That cable runs to another room with RJ45 (color and wires checked)
8. Plug laptop in the RJ45 jack in that room (network cable unplugged) ????
10. the run is aproximately maybe 100 feet or more (could that be the problem??????)

I have rechecked and rechecked all

Thanks

AL
