Connecting to the internet with Wi-Fi

I recently bought a long range Wi-Fi card with an external antenna. So far, I have been unable to connect to the internet. It seems there are 2 ways to connect to the internet. One way is to use the Windows program to connect and the other is to use the utility that came with the LAN Card. When I try to connect using the Window software I show several locations (6 to 8) with good signals but I can’t configure my computer to use one of these locations to connect to the internet. Usually about half the signals are open and the rest protected with passwords. My question is how do I use one of the open signals to connect to the internet?

When I use the utility that came with the card, I get even more locations with a strong signal but the icon in the system tray has an X through it even though it is the correct color for a strong signal and link quality is rated as GREAT or GOOD. I have the same problem as above; I can’t find a way to make my computer connect to the internet.

Today, I parked in the local Home Depot parking lot and tried the above for about 40 minutes before giving up. I need to know how to make my computer link up to one of the open signals.

I’m using XP Pro with SP 2 and all applicable Windows updates. The Device Manger shows the driver is installed and working properly.

Please help!

Hank

look in the advanced tab on your windows wireless network connection. make sure its set to "any available network" instead of assigning the wireless connection to a specified router or access point. next click on the view wireless networks button in wireless network connection properties. highlight the wireless network that you want to connect to and click the connect button in the bottom right corner of rhe screen.
i would also set my connection to obtain ip address automatically, just to be on the safe side.

Having your own internet provider would be better than trying to connect to someone elses network and possibly bogging down there resources.

Some states consider that theft and/or invasion of privacy.
