Post Newbie Peer to Peer Network help

Right now I am a very confused person, I hope someone can help me out. To you guys, this seems pretty simple, but I have hardly any networking knowledge so this will be harder.

I recently built a new computer (900 mhz, 40 gig, 256 megs) to go with my other computer (400 mhz, 18 gig, 128 megs). Both computers have the same network card (RealTek 8029 card) and both have Windows 98 First Edition. The 400 mhz computer is hooked up to a cable modem as well, so that computer has two network cards. I have been able to get a network going on these two computers but I have NOT been able to get internet sharing to work.

Many people have told me that I cannot have internet sharing because I have first edition, others say it is possible. Does anyone have a good tutorial on what I am doing or can give me some advice? Thanks...

I think they are right.
ICS came out with 98SE
So you won't have the window98 ICS with the older version of win98, but it can be done very easily without it.
Suggest buying a router, WAY better than ICS.

Yeah....

That would work, but I don't want to spend anymore money. So what are my other options?

Hi mhoffner,

AnalogX Proxy
http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...work/proxy.htm

Works like ICS only it's small, free, and works with any version of Windows.

Hope that helps.

You may not want to spend any more money, but I agree, do yourself a favor and get a router. If you're at the point where you have more than one machine in your home, you'll soon find that a router is one of the coolest pieces of hardware that you can buy. You get you internet connection shared without having to have a "master" machine on all the time and as a side benefit, you are now hardware firewalled. It's probably about as bulletproof as you're going to get on a home network so you don't have to worry about hackers. They're easy to set up, and once running, just sits in the corner doing it's job. So spend the money, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks

Thanks guys, I want to get a router badly, but I am a bit short on cash right now. I have the AnalogX program, and its ready to go, but I suddenly have a new problem.

On my newer machine, everytime I boot up I get an error before loading windows. The error says that there was an error bringing up the protocol 0. Any idea what this is?

Thanks again...
