"Internet Gateway" connection ?
Hi,
This is probably a dumb question. I have Adelphia high speed cable access. I have a Linksys WRT54G router that I have my desktop and laptop connected to. Both are connected via an ethernet cable. When I click on Network Connections in the control panel on my laptop two items display. One is "Lan or High-Speed Internet" and the other is "Internet Gateway." Both say they are connected. I have seen the "Lan" connection in the past, but I don't remember seeing the "Internet Gateway" connection. Is this normal? The reason I ask is that I went away this past week and I connected to the hotel's LAN connection and I want to be sure that something wasn't downloaded to my computer which might cause a problem. The reason for my concern is that both say they are connected at the same time. Thank you. Rob |

The gateway appears when you run the XP networking wizard incorrectly. If it works fine, don't worry about it. You can try deleting it.

Thanks glc. I disabled "Internet Gateway" before writing earlier and I lost my connection and then enabled it again. So, as long as it is no problem I will leave it alone. The strange thing is that I don't recall running the networking wizard. I have not networked the two computers. I got the router for added security and to allow me to access the internet from both computers.
I have been thinking about networking them and when I do, will it be a problem running the wizard at that time. Both have XP Home on them. Thanks. |

I never run the wizard. I set up networking manually using Win2000 procedures.

when I installed my WRT54G the "internet gateway" icon also appeared in my network connections, and I did NOT run the network setup wizard. I also noticed that it only appears when I boot my computer, then disappears after a little while. I figure it is Windows XP telling me it detects a router, and I just leave it alone. When I did try to remove it, I lost my internet connection. I wouldn't worry about it.
