best channel for wireless router

I just finished building a media center PC which talks to the internet via a wireless internet connection from my media PC in my familyroom to my wireless router upstairs (only one flight of stairs). The wireless connection is reasonably stable and the signal strength is high yet I can't seem to get the connection to stay on for more than 24 hours without it being lost. I am using a Linksys WRT54G router with a wireless linksys card in the media PC. I figure my problems are because I have three 2.4 GHz phones in my house. Can anybody with a similar situation recommend the best channel to use on this router to minimize interference? Both PC's are running XP pro with SP2.

thanks

chad

I personally have a 2.4 Ghz phone that kept pulling the signal from my laptop, so what I did was change the frequency on the wireless output of the router. In the router settings under Wireless, I just changed the channel to 1 (you could pick 11, either extreme, but not 6) and it works. Your phone might be different to try 1 and 11, and see what works.

1, 6 and 11 are known as the sweet spots, but most routers are default to 6. I would also recommend trying 1 or 11.

I'd replace the phones with 900 MHz or 5.8 GHz models.
