Intermittent Disconnect

Using Win XP Home SP2
Motorola Surfboard SB4200 cable modem supplied by ISP provider (RoadRunner)
LinkSys BEFSR41 Ver 3 wired router; no networking, but on rare occasions I hook up a wire to a secondary PC just to access the internet
Ethernet connections
GVC-RealTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter ("Allow computer to turn off device" disabled)
Power Options: Monitor off after one hour; Hard disks off after two hours; System standby, never. Hibernate, off.

Occasionally, I lose my internet connection, regardless of the browser, FireFox 1.04 (my default), Netscape 7.0, or IE 6.0. It seems to always happen when I leave my PC for a long period of time (a few hours), but sometimes it happens if I don't access the internet for a short period of time (a half an hour).

When this happens, I cannot access the internet but I can get my email and access newsgroups; other times I can't access any of the three.

Bypassing the router does not reconnect the PC, but rebooting always fixes the problem.

This is an irritating problem for which I'd like to find the ultimate solution, but I'd even settle for a solution that would allow me to reconnect without having to reboot.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
EdP

I have the same problem unless I leave a browser open. If it sits at the desktop then I have the same problem as you.

Disable hard disks off after any period of time. Update the router firmware.

If you have a router, you don't need Zone Alarm. I'd uninstall it if you continue to have problems and enable the internal XP SP2 firewall for a second line of defense, it's adequate.
