switched to dsl phone line out of comp doesn't work

I just helped my step set up his DSL at his comp. Before when he's had dialup the phone next to his computer was functioning out of the "phone" plug on the back of the computer. Now that DSL is hooked up VIA Ethernet cable the phone doesn't display a line anymore. (checked all connections)

Any help is appreciated thanks.

  • Ensure that each phone socket has a Micro filter attached to it.
  • Remove any devices which may interfere with the connection (fax machines, TV dialup etc.)

Try unplugging everything except one phone, do you have an active line? Now try it with a Filter.

It could be down to either the line itself or a bad micro filter.

The DSL is hooked up to ethernet. Why would you have a phone line connected to the computer, I am assuming via the old modem, where the line out is for the POTS line? Why not connect the phone to the wall where the line in foir the modem was before.

Most DSL kits come with splitter/filters. Plug one into the wall phone jack, plug the DSL modem into the DSL jack on the filter, plug a cable into the phone jack on the filter, connect it to the input jack on the old dialup modem. Then the phone plugged into the output jack on the old modem will work.
