kind of a dumb question about net logon

I reformatted and reinstalled win98se on a computer in our network. How do I get the network logon screen to pop up when windows loads? Currently windows finishes loading, and I have to logoff before the "Enter your password for Microsoft networking" box pops up.

if you have not already done so, you need to load networking from the cd, you may not have selected it in the install.
place the cd in the drive and under add/remove windows programs look for networking and install it, you should have the network nieghborhood icon if you have it installed.

I can access the network. I just want the network logon to appear before windows completes loading, the way it's set up on the other computers in the network. As it stands, I have to go to logoff windows, and then the network logon box appears.

Try this. Control Panel>Networking> Select Microsoft Client in the drop down instead of Windows Logon.

It does have Microsoft Client in the drop down. I can't see how this computer's networking is set up any differently from the other computers, unless there's something in an .ini file or the registry somewhere?

you may need to set up a user name and password in order to get the logon screen, you are asked if you want to do that during the install, I think, but see if this link will help you.

When you start Windows 98 you may not receive a Windows or Network logon dialog box. You may also receive one of the following error messages:

• No network provider accepted the given network path.
• The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to the network. The specified service does not exist.
In addition, the Change Passwords tab may be missing from the Passwords Properties dialog box.

This behavior can occur if the AutoLogon entry appears in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

AutoLogon=x

where x is a number.

----------------------------------------------

Find this registry key and delete it.

Thanks guys! the article Bailey pointed to had that tip from glc, and that did the trick!
I wonder if this happened because I was using Dell system restore disks to install the operating system, instead of a windows disk.
A huge frustration gone...thanks again!
