DSL with Wireless Router problem

I have a rather strange problem. I have cable Adelphia internet that I use with a Netgear 802.11b router. Everything works just fine.
So I decide to try DSL from Verizon - it's cheaper. When I hook up my laptop to Westell DSL modem everything seems to work fine. However once I connect DSL modem to Netgear wireless router problems start. Some pages - the ones that require password of some kind or login, takes very long time to load and some don't even load. Also with that connection I cannot connect to Hotmail account with Outlook. It work with POP mails though. I spent some time with a Verizon tech - he says it's a Netgear issue. Has anyone seen it before. Any ideas would be helpful.

I'm running XP SP2, ZoneAlarm Firewall, AVG. I did try to shut down firewall and anti-virus.

Switch the Westell into the bridge mode and configure the Netgear for a PPPoE connection.
