Hey Guys
I want comments on what I am doing (right or wrong). I have connected 10 compurtes to 1 server. 7 of them are near by i.e. 10 - 20 meters apart but remaining 3 computers are 400, 500, 450 meters apart respectevely. This I am doing with 1 switch of 16 ports, 1 hub of 16 ports and another switch of 8 ports. Lan connections are slow but working, am I doing right or there is another way of doing this . Pls tell me ! |

if the hub is a standard hub, I would dump it for a reapeater what I think is called a active hub, one that amplifies the signal,
400 meters is pushing it a bit, and yes it would be a tad slower. if you could use a fiber backbone to the ferthest ones it would be much better, but also more expensive too. |

are you doing this over a 400m length without repeating the signal?
i believe the un-repeated length cat5 can go is 100m, so like bailey said, you will need an active hub in there every 100m. that would explain why it is going so slow. craig

A cheap simple switch (not a hub) can be used as a repeater. You need one every 100 meters. The reason you need a switch and not a hub is to preserve full duplex operation.

That's still only half duplex and is a big bottleneck. With that many machines, you need a 100 mbs switched network.
