network setup...did I miss something
Hey, this is my first post. I was able to build my new rig and get it running by lurking but I'm having trouble with setting up the network. Here is my situation, hopefully you guys can help me out...
I have two machines: "AMD3000" running XP-Pro (SP2) and "PENT3" running 2000-Pro. They are sharing a cable internet connection over a Dlink DI-524 router (both wired). Both machines can access the internet Here is what I've done so far on both machines.... 1. Configured NetBios over TCP/IP. Client Microsoft Network and File/Print Sharing are both selected 2. Created a folder on each desktop named "share" and selected share this folder under the properties and assigned users permission to access the shared folder. 3. Assigned each computer to the same "workgroup" 4. Assigned identical usernames and passwords 5. Reboot and check network neighborhood and I can't see the other computer. "AMD3000" can see itself, it's shared folder. It also see's the router but not in the workgroup "Pent3" does not see anything 6. I go to add new network place on AMD3000 I type \\pent3\share and I get an error on Pent 3 I type \\AMD3000\share and I get a new screen -->Enter name for this connection, I type something and then I get an error Things I've checked: 1. on AMD3000 the XP firewall is off 2. zonealarm is off on both machines 3. IP information AMD3000 IP 192.XXX.X.101 PENT3 IP 192.XXX.X.100 subnet 255.255.255 subnet 255.255.255 gateway 192.168.0.1 Did I miss a step? What are the next things I should check? Sorry for the long note, I tried to be as detailed as possible. -Slap |

Ok first things first. Did you remember to turn off Simple file sharing on the XP? Once you turn off simple file sharing, right click on your "share" folder and make sure that you start by sharing everyone. You can always remove it after you make sure that both computers can see the shared folder.
Again, if this is your first experience on using network shares. I would recommend that you dont do anything on your system drive. or desktop .. try creating sharing a folder that is not nested within your Documents and Settings or your Windows directories. |

Thanks for the reply Statica,
1. No I did not turn off Simple file sharing, I'll try that 2. I'm confused by the second part of you post.... By system drive do you mean the hard drive my OS is installed on? Where can I create a folder that is not nested within your Documents and Settings or your Windows directories? My second hard drive on the XP machine? Thanks -Slap |

yes the system drive is where windows is installed
right click start button choose explore>then click to highlight your system drive, then click file>new>folder>name it and the path should now be ie: C:\new folder then right click it and choose sharing and security, and set it up as a shared folder for everyone. |

It's working!!!
OB1 your troubleshooting post was right on. Turns out I needed to clear out my host file on the 2K machine. Thanks again... Now that the network is up I need to figure out how to do high speed file transfer with these gigabyte ethernet ports, but I won't hijack my own thread. I'll search around a bit and start a new topic but any quick links are appreciated. -Slap |

your gigabit cards should be set to autodetect. the router and switch need to support gigabit transfer rates otherwise you will only be able to achieve 100mbps transfer speeds
