setting up a network
OK, hey there folks. I've got a problem which I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out with. I have a Belkin router with wired + wireless capability. There are two computers connected to the router via ethernet and three computers connected via 802.11g wireless technology. All computers are able to connect to the internet, but none of them recognize each other when trying to "view workgroup computers" (meaning no file / printer sharing). Every now and then, one of the other computers will show up in the "view workgroup computers" area, but I when I try to open it up, after about 30 seconds, an error message will pop up. I've tried everything that I could think of, including Microsoft's "Home Network Setup Wizard" on all of the computers, but nothing has worked. Does anyone know what I should do to fix this problem?
Secondly, I still often talk to the network administrator at my old high school, and he today gave me a couple of printer servers and network switches due to the fact that they're upgrading their network (848 computers, wow!). I've got all the necessary equipment, including about 12 50+ foot cat6 cables, so I'm hoping that someone can explain to me exactly what to do with all of these. Switches: (2 of these) D-Link "DSH-8" "10/100 Dual Speed Hub w/ Switch" 8 ports + 1 uplink Printer Servers: (2 of these) HP "Jetdirect 300X" (has 1 rj-45 port + one parallel port) OK, so here's my main question concercing these switches + printer servers. How much better would it be to use these than to continue using the Belkin router (assuming I'm going to be able to get file + printer sharing working). How would I go about setting up a network using say, one switch for all of the computers, and two printer servers (one for each printer on the network), or even both switches. Basically, I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to do this. Please help, thanks in advance! |

do you have them all set to the same workgroup? what OS is on each PC? if you have any firewalls on the 5 pcs turn them off until you get file sharing working. then can you ping each pc by its ip address? or computer name? here's an article to help troubleshoot: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=136500
next create a folder to share out on the system drive. then right click and choose sharing and security and share it out to everyone (this is in the group or username field for the permissions of the shared folder). for example: C:\shared folder as far as the router vs. switch debate, you will still need the router since it is providing all of your devices (printers, and pcs, gaming consoles) with an ip address (192.168.1.100) subnet mask and default gateway, and since most retail routers only have four ports, just take one of the switches and then take an ethernet cable from the router and plug it into the uplink port on the switch, so instead of four ports on the router you now have 11 ports available to plug in devices. for the printers, use the rj-45 ports and connect them to the switch then i would assign those print servers static ip addresses.
