I've just ordered a 56k external modem and want to use it for both my upstairs and downstairs computers. One computer uses win98se and the other uses win95b. I haven't networked them yet but I plan to use existing phone wiring to set up my network (the computers are three floors and 90 ft. apart) The modem will be installed on the Win 98 machine. Can someone tell me the basic steps for allowing both computers to use the same modem? Thanks in advance!

Get a home phoneline networking kit - such as the Diamond HomeFree - and get the 2 computers talking to each other. Then you can use Internet Connection Sharing (comes with 98SE) to share the dialup connection. Use that instead of the Wingate software that comes with the Diamond kit.

ut1205, I recommend you read the information here at pcmech http://www.pcmech.com/networking.htm
also www.practicallynetworked.com is worth a read as well. |
