Sbc Dsl
I used to live in a house in which Comcast was connected. When I moved in I installed a Linksys wireless router(54Mbps) without any pains and it worked fine with several computers. Recently I moved to a house where the owner wants to order SBC DSL. I went to SBC's website and I see there are 2 choices either Dynamic(cheapest) or static(more expensive). I also noticed you can ask them to install other equipment.
Our primary concern is to have the DSL , of course, and then I would like to install the wireless router so I can use it with the laptop and other computers with wireless cards. Do apple laptops also have wireless cards that work with this wireless router? That's what the owner has. What is the most inexpensive and reliable signal SBC offers and what kind of equipment does it include? Will I be able to install this router as painlessly as when I did it with the Comcast cable? Do I need any other hardware or links that point as to what to do? I recently posted a question for dialup, that was for work, this one is for home. Thanks. |

DSL and Cable both use modems. I would order the self-install kit from SBC. It will include a DSL modem and phone filters for each phone. You can use your router. How many people will be using the connection? That will determine what speed you should get. I would get the dynamic Pro package if more than one person will be using it and/or you will be downloading a lot of large files. I would not get a static ip address.

2 persons using the connection. Phone filters? SBC is installing the phone as well. Any other suggestions?

If you don't use the filters, you will hear noise when you use your phone. Unfiltered phones can transmit artifacts back into the phone line.

SBC is shipping Speedstream 5100 modems now - these are actually routers. To use it with your Linksys, there will be a 2 step install.
Install the modem on a standalone computer as per instructions, set up your account. When done, log into the modem's interface and look in the advanced section. You want to turn off PPPoE and routing, and set it to be a simple "bridge" modem. Then connect it to your router, connect the router to your computer, log into the router, set it up for PPPoE instead of obtain IP address automatically, put in your username and password. Apple Airport cards are compatible with 128 bit WEP encryption. |

Glc, can I do all this without a standalone computer? If not would it make a difference if I use an old Compaq 233Mhz or a P3 700? Which kit would you order provided you want to set it up without SBC's software? Any other considerations for installation?
Thanks. Last edited by Charles; 08-09-2005 at 08:52 PM. |

Manual account activation:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8346 The 233 will be fine for this. After this is done, kick the modem to bridge mode and set up your router. |

I ordered SBC DSL self installation kit and they sent the 4100 series modem. Any problems with this?
Update, Never mind they are using 4100's now. Last edited by Charles; 08-22-2005 at 10:46 AM. |

Glc,
I am thinking of formatting the hard drive in the standalone computer using XP Professional. If I do this will it be alright to go online after registration and get the Windows patches with only Windows Firewall until security updates are downloaded along with AVG? Also this computer will be shared between 2 roommates. How is best to establish two accounts with passwords so we can't access each others files? Last, can the Master Account Member ID password be changed after registration? Can other accounts be establish that the Master account person can not have access to? There will be 2 people sharing this computer(standalone) and we will like to keep 2 separate accounts. We will also have a wireless router for laptops. Will the wireless router WRT54G by Linksys do well on a split level house? I was planning on installing upstairs where the bedrooms are. Any other ideas? Thanks. 1. It would be best to get it up on the router to reinstall Windows but the Windows firewall is better than nothing.
2. Just create 2 users when you do the setup. The hassle will be who has the Administrator password, with this, one user can get at the other user's files by logging in as Administrator. There must be some degree of trust on a multiuser computer unless you have a 3rd party change the Administrator password. 3. Yes, it can be changed at any time. Same applies as above for security, master account is the administrator. 4. You won't know till you try it. There are 3 different types of 4100's - bridge, PPPoE, and router. Seems to be a lot of speculation in the dslreports forums about it and its compatibility with 3rd party routers. |

1. What do you mean by "getting it up on the router"?
2. Ok. 3. So the Master Account for SBC can access emails from other accounts? 4. Are you saying it's possible this modem won't work with the 54G router? Modem Info SpeedStream 4100 Ethernet ADSL Modem Part Number: 060-D141-A12 Last edited by Charles; 08-22-2005 at 12:44 PM. |

1. Connecting it to the router to connect to the Internet instead of directly to the modem, unless the modem is still in the router mode.
3. No. However, the master account can create, delete, and modify subaccounts through the Web interface. 4. Possible but unlikely, as long as you can get it running in the bridge mode. That part number doesn't tell me which variant the modem is and how SBC may have modified it. |

Problem solved, Linksys support had me download latest firmware for 54G router and choose a few other settings.
Thanks. Last edited by Charles; 08-22-2005 at 08:57 PM. |

WRT54G Linksys Router & SpeedStream 4100 modem without SBC software
Installation of this wireless router after having installed modem with dsl working per link http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8346
by Glc above. 1. No need to make modem a bridge. Leave as is in PPPoE. 2. Disconnect cable from Network Card on PC(coming from modem) and connect it to router's internet port. 3. Connect RJ45 from #2 port on router to the Network Card on PC. 4. Call Linksys support at this point and they will run you by the rest of the process since I don't remember every single step, but basically goes like this: A. They want you to log to their support site and do the automatic configuration. B. Within the configuration you will download the latest firmware for you router's version, set it to WEP and pick a password for security, saving all these changes as you go along. C. Although sometimes difficult to understand, support is from India I believe, Linksys support is good. D. Happy wireless. Last edited by Charles; 08-23-2005 at 10:46 AM. |

Update and Question
Glc,
This connection has been working well for over 10 days now. We don't use the standalone computer in the house and I have turned it off. Wireless seems to be working just fine. Is there any reason why I need to have this standalone computer ON,other than regular updates? Thanks. |

Nope, as long as the wireless doesn't drop out. Then you can fire it up to admin the router if needed.
