Trouble setting up router: bad ethernet adapter?
I've been attempting to set up my new Linksys BEFSR41 router to my wife's computer and have been having problems getting it working. I called Linksys tech support, went through a bunch of tests, and was told their diagnosis. I'm not sure what they told me (or what I think they told me) makes sense. Does this sound right?.......... They said the ethernet adapter on the PC was not working. I asked how the ethernet adapter could not be working, yet we still are able to get the DSL service when we are not going through the router. They countered that we are accessing the DSL service through the PPP adapter, not the ethernet adapter.
I've never messed with networking before, what's the difference between the PPP and ethernet adapters? Are the PPP and ethernet adapters both on the ethernet card? Why would one use one over the other? |

Sounds like bunk to me. Typical tech support from my opinion...don't care WHO it is. Anyway, are you sure that you have the ethernet from your dsl modem going to the correct port on the Linksys router? Then another Cat5 going from one of your 4ports to the NIC of your PC? Can you get into the router by typing 192.168.1.1 in the addressline of your browser? (I think this is the router configuration address) It's been awhile sinse I used a BEFSR41.

It's not bunk. The PPP adapter is in the OS. The network adapter is acting as a simple passthrough when you connect a bridge modem to it and are using a PPPoE client on the computer to log into DSL. Using the router, it has to be fully functional with properly functioning TCP/IP.
