Wireless Routing between two Linksys WRT54G routers
Hey guys, I have a general networking question. I recently moved into a new apartment, and both of my room mates are females. One of them is really anal about appearances, and refuses to run wires through the living room. She has the cable modem in her bedroom, with a Linksys WRT54G router. She has a CAT5 connection to the router, and I'm stuck connecting wirelessly from my room. However, now that I've got my desktop moved in, it doesn't have a wireless card. I have my own WRT54G router, and what I want to do is this: can I set up my router to receive the signal from her router wirelessly, so that I can connect my laptop and desktop to the router in my room with CAT5 cables? I'm not sure if I'm adequately explaining what I'm trying to accomplish, so I've included a diagram:
Is this possible? |

I have the same WRT54G and I am not aware of a setting in it to turn it into a repeater or set it to receive a wireless signal.
I just upgrade my firmware from 3.0.3.6 to to 4.20.6, found some new features but not the one you are looking for. I am not saying it is not possible, but I am not aware of the settings. Seems I recall some routers have the ability to setup and work like an Access point but I can not find that in his router.

I am just thinking outside the box, but you could do the following.
Get one of these. Connect the end of it to one of these. Then plug this into the other end of the coupler and run Cat5 cable from there to the router. The setup is definitely a little expensive and a little extreme, besides a fire hazard, but if you can't configure the router and you really want it... (If somebody only made a connector with the female end of a USB port into a male RJ45 connector, life would be great.) »fo |

I got a definitive answer from the Linksys customer support lady. Here's the transcript of our conversation:
Hi, my name is Arlene Renee (12511). How may I help you? Jay: I am using two WRT54G's, and wondering if one could be configured to receive the wireless signal of the other Arlene Renee (12511): No. Arlene Renee (12511): If you want that kind of setup, it would be a wrt54g and a wap54g that will be connecting wirelessly to the router. Jay: Can you give me a price estimate on the WAP54G? Arlene Renee (12511): Let me just check. Arlene Renee (12511): Okay. It seems it cost $79.99 on bestbuy. Arlene Renee (12511): Still there? Jay: Hm.. I think I'll check out eBay, $80 is more than I paid for the router. Thanks for your help! ![]() Arlene Renee (12511): You are welcome. Arlene Renee (12511): Will there be anything else that I could help you with? Jay: Nope, that's it. Thanks again. Jay: disconnected Arlene Renee (12511): disconnected Newegg.com has the WAP54G for $67, so I'll probably end up getting it there. Hope this is helpful for anyone else having a similar problem. |

I am not installing a wireless pci card in my desktop for a number of reasons. I'm really not a big fan of wireless, so if I can put both of my computers on a (semi-)wired connection with only one device, that's what I'll do.
