Hi
I have just built a new computer and would like to link it to my old machine via a cable link on the parallel port to transfer files etc. Both are using MS98 2nd edition and I have run the direct link connection wizard and one is a host and one a guest. I have shared some files but neither comp is able to talk to the other. Can anyone suggest any ideas or point me to a site with a tutorial on this as I cant sem to get it working. Many thanks Doogle |

hey doogle, i'm havin the same problem as u too. i've found this site which i suppose might help http://www.tecno.demon.co.uk/dcc/dcc.html#prep
it says the NetBEUI protocol is required. when I tried installing it, the system tells me the "NetBEUI cannot be installed with Creative ADSL DE7410 (which is my ADSL modem)". what do I do? |

Doogle - it might be easier and faster to pull the hard drive out of the old computer and slave it to the drive in the new one - and copy files that way - then just put it back.
salt: Try IPX/SPX - that would work just like Netbeui. Remember that the direct cable is actually using the dialup adapter. |

Just a quick question: Do you have the right cable?
To hook two computers together using the parallel you need a special cross-over cable (sometimes refered to as a "laplink cable"). a regular parallel cable wont work.

If it is a cable sold for this purpose (laplink, direct cable connection, file transfer, etc.) it should work.
Well - it looks like you will need to use TCP/IP - just manually assign IP addresses to TCP/IP for the DIALUP ADAPTER on both machines - try 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. You will have to enable file and print sharing over TCP/IP - which is not a good practice but you can change this when you are done. Windows is going to bitch at you for trying to change the TCP/IP properties of the dialup adapter, but do it anyway - unless you have a dialup networking connection that you use with a modem. If this is the case, you will need a 3rd party software package such as Laplink to get the parallel ports connected. |
