Lost internet connection after switching computers…
My friend and his Dad just switched computers, my buddy got his Dad’s laptop and he gave his dad his desktop. But the problem is the desktop will no longer connect to the net using the same Ethernet cable that worked for the laptop it was previously connected to. The connection is enabled and the driver is not showing an exclamation point in the device manager, I brought him though most of the basic troubleshooting steps but he or I can’t figure out what it could be. Any ideas? My best guess is the network he is one (of maybe 5 computers) has assigned the laptop some specific i.d. to the cable it was on, and now when it sees a different computer it won’t connect. Maybe that doesn’t make any sense, anyway just looking for a few suggestions for him to try, thanks.

hmmm... I think you have to connect the cable to the laptop and release the IP from the console first. Then, connect the desktop, and renew the IP through the console.

The IP given to the NIC is lost as soon as it's disconnected anyway. Just to test to see if the cable is bad, bring up a DOS box and type in "ipconfig /renew" without the quotes. When it's in the process of pulling an address, it will say "Media disconnected" if the cable is faulty. This is because there is no signal life in the cable.
