Slow Download speeds

Hey,

Im new to these fourms and this is my first post regarding download speeds. I have a DSl connenction to the internet from Aliant the speed is 10.0 Mbs. When I try to download anything I get really slow speeds like 20-60 kbs which is really slow. I was wondering why it is so slow it's always been this slow too, My friend has eastlink High speed and he gets at slowest over 100 kbs and usually over 150kbs. I was wondering why my download speeds are so slow and what I can to to Increase them?

Have you run virus and spyware scans lately?

Yeah I've run norton/AVG/ spybot S&D and adware by lavasoft as well as a restart and nothing comes up no spyware or viruses. Both virus scanners are up-to-date as well.

Another Q, does you DSL service state the speeds for upload and download, for me I have fibertel 1 mega ( in Argentina) and we have a cap on both download and upload speeds for the price we pay each month. I havent had internet in Canada for over 5 years, so I don't know exactly how the providors work.

Ancho de banda: (width of band - speed limit)
- Downstream: Hasta (until - up to) 1024 Kbps (1 mega)
- Upstream: Hasta (until - up to) 128 Kbps

Well I found this in the FAQ:

Q: How fast is Aliant High-Speed?
A: Aliant High Speed is extremely fast! Download speed (receiving information, surfing the web) is up to 50 times faster than a regular Dial-up connection. Upload speeds (sending information) is also up to 20 times faster than a regular dial-up connection.

Some other Info that may help is I have windows XP home, No routers I have about 4 phones, 1 900 MHz cordless phone, and Im not networking. I only have 1 computer and it's the only one connected to the internet. My service provider is aliant. I have a rectangular box that measures about 20cmx15cmx4cm that has a round grey cable connecting it to a usb port 5 lights that have type above them reading: power/alert/lan activity/lan link/ADSl links As well as CT-301 ADSL MODEM. the phones all have something connected to them that connects it to the phone jack (filters?).

Again sorry for the poor explanations and terms/info.

Call the provider and tell them... You are paying for there service after all.

They should be able to test your speed remotely and tell you if it where is should be.

Also go here http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

Click on the start button and report what kind of results you get.

I also found this one http://reviews.cnet.com/Bandwidth_me...-7254_7-0.html
Even eayser...

And the old standby DSL reports

some times it will depend on what your downloading too, some servers can be loaded heavy and will cause slower downloads.
did you check your speed with pcpitstop.com ?
if not, try that first and see what it is with them.

Those are fairley consistant and common speeds with DSL.

You might try to contact them and see what kind of speeds you should expect. They most likely have other packages that are faster for more money.
