Really slow internet

Ok, I have cable internet 3Mbps, but it usual tops out at about 300kbps. And when Im trying to play a game the pings are outrageous, as well as other programs it has alot of lag, and I was wondering what could be causing this, the modem is connected directly to my computer, and I was going to call my ISP but there is always about 20 minutes at least of wait. Also could it be my onboard Ethernet port causing this its a SiS 900-based PCI Fast ethernet adapter

thats about normal for your connection. its the difference in Bits and Bytes. its similar to saying your car can top out at 150MPH but you tell everyone 220 feet per second (200fps is the same as 150mph).

3Mb cable will be able to download at about 300Kbps. my 4Mb cable tops out at 400ish, i have seen 550kb/s but only once. normal is around 300-350.

It is, roughly. What speed is your provider advertising? I have a service that advertises speeds between 256Kbps and 500Kbps (standard DSL), and I get between those speeds. Speed drops are down to a few factors, the server you're downloading from may be under heavy load, bandwidth may be being sucked up by applications on your computer or by other computers in your network (if you're in a network). Have you called your provider to see if they can do anything?

3000kb/s is not equal to 3000 KB/s

its marketing

3000kb/s=300KB/s

What types of pings are you getting?
