linksys wrt54g
Ok, I got this wireless router from this guy, and im trying to set it up to work on my network. My network is already setup for DHCP shouldnt I be able to just plug it into my internet connection and have my laptop with intergrated wireless connect that way? I plugged in the router (linksys wrt54g) and I can connect to the internet and surf by using the wired switch on the back and a cat5 cable, but the laptop doesnt seem to see any wireless connections that can be used to surf the internet. Do I have to plug this router in directly from my cable modem? I dont see why that would make a difference, I pluged it in from my D-link router. so the cable goes into the cable modem, then from there to a d-link router, then to a switch, then to the linksys. I dont understand why it would work for the switch on the back of the linksys, but not the wireless. I almost think maybe that part of the linksys (wireless) doesnt work. the lights on the linksys router are lit up like this
power light stays on WLAN light is on but blinks off/on/off/on ever second or two Internet light stays on but blinks off/on maybe every 20-30 seconds the other lights for the switch will light up if I plug a computer into it and the DMZ light is off I've never setup a wireless network before so I'm a noob at this |

having 2 routers on the same network is usually not recommended as it is difficult to configure. You really only need to use the WRT54G. The WLAN and the Internet light are supposed to flicker, they do on my WRT54G and it works fine. Go into your browser and go into the configuration settings of the WRT54G, its IP address is 192.168.1.1 go into the wireless settings and make sure the wireless mode is set to 'both' or g-only if your laptop supports it. Post back with your progress and I'll try to help you get your wireless network going.

Remove the D-Link router and replace it with the Linksys. You can uplink your switch to the Linksys if you need more than 4 computers connected or if the switch is in a remote location and you only want to run 1 cable from the router to that location.

ok I tried hooking it up straight from the modem and I wasnt able to surf at all, I powered down everything then turned on the modem, router, then my pc still nothing, however I was able to see another computer that was also pluged into the router, but none of them could surf the internet. I tried going to the address
http://192.168.1.1 it asks for a username and password, but when I leave the username blank and type 'admin' for password like the manual says it asks for it again, 3 times and I get a page that says authentication required, I even tried the reset button on the router but still will not let me access that page. Maybe I need to release and renew IP in the winXP machines, I forget just what to type to get winXP to do that in the command prompt. that doesnt make any since to me why the router will not work pluged into the modem by itself but it will work (the switch part at least) when pluged into my d-link router and switch box. I'll try the power down everything again a couple more times. I hate when you do everything exactly as it says in a manual but then doesnt work.

Hold the reset button on the WRT54G for 30 seconds or more and the router will be restored to factory defaults.

I have the same router, and to access the online configuration, the username for me is my computers name which is like (a few numbers)ryan(numbers and letters) then for password I set one myself when I ran the install Cd that came with the router. If you have the cd then you should have used it before attaching the router and any cables (or at least that what it says to do).

Ok I got it working,
LOL the problem was that on my laptop, it has a button and also a light to activate the wireless and also show that it's on, well the light no longer works, in other words, it wasnt turned on on my laptop, doh! and just to let you all know, I went ahead and hooked it back up the original way I had it, cable going to modem, then to D-link router, then to switch, then to linksys, and everything is working just fine. |
