Linksys BEFSX41

Hey guys! So I've had this router for a long time now and I just seem to have nothing but problems with it. Its really really annoying! So the problem I'm having with it is stable internet connectivity. I have SBC Yahoo! DSL and the router is a Linksys BEFSX41. When I connect directly to the modem BOOM my computer is online with no problems. But when I connect it all through the router thats when I run into problems. Heres how its setup...

Phone line IN to DSL Modem
cat5 cable out of DSL Modem into Router WAN port
2 computer connected to ports 1 and 2.

I have the router setup to automatically find an IP address and settings or whatever and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. But even when it does work after awhile it stops working again! Its so annoying!! And how I get it to work is just weird. What I do is ill plug my computer directly into the modem so I'm online, then I'll plug the modem into the router then the router to my computer and then USUALLY that will get me back online. I don't know what to make of this. The Firmware version on it is Firmware

Version: 1.50.18, Apr 30 2004

I called Linksys a bunch of times and I never seem to get anywhere! I just don't want to have to mess with the router every week or 2! One thing I thought MIGHT work was maybe if I set it to PPPoE instead of automatically finding settings so I could set it up to connect through our username and password to SBC. To me that seemed like a good plan but I can never get it to connect that way. ANY suggestions are very much so appreciated so if you have any ideas just let me know! Thanks a lot guys =D

you may want to look at replaceing that router, I have had a couple of them go bad and replaced them with the g series router from linksys.

I don't have my notes with me right now but there was one model of linksys router that was a problem, the same type as you discribed.

Which modem model do you have? Best results with SBC DSL are when you switch the modem into "bridge" mode and set the router up for PPPoE. If the modem is handling PPPoE and/or routing functions, using a 3rd party router can be problematic. If you can connect the modem directly into the PC and get on line without entering a username and password, the modem is set for PPPoE and also possibly routing.

What difference does it make in this thread what brand router I'm using?

Well, you asked, so I have a Westell 36R516 bridge modem, a Linksys BEFSR41 router, and Earthlink DSL. I have quite a few customers with SBC DSL, so I've seen them all.
