Problems adding XP pro computer to LAN
My friend is staying with me for a while, so I thought I'd hook his XP comp up to my LAN so he could use internet and we can join online together to play BF2. However we can't make it work!
We used the network connection wizard to connect to the existing network. What ended up happening was a connection was created to Internet Gateway, as well as the LAN connection. The wireless/wired Netgear MR814 router is connected, and shows activity via blinking LED. Icons in the system tray show both connections connected, with LAN at 100mbps, and Internet Gateway at 10mbps! We were able to get internet to work somewhat last night, but today it is no longer running for his computer. All other computers are working fine. Let me know what else you need to know. Originally, he had his LAN port disabled, and used wireless to connect. We were unable to connect his comp wirelessly. (Showed great connection, but no internet surfing allowed) I suspect that I just need to clear out the stored settings for internet connections and start over, but I am unable to delete any of the previous connections. I ran windows diagnostic tool by typing "netsh diag gui" but nothing showed up as a fail... I ran some tests using PING that I found from http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;314067 What appears is that I cannot ping a name, but I can ping a number. I need to now figure out how to fix DNS, and what settings I might need to configure in my router.... sound good? Last edited by EDB; 09-08-2005 at 12:22 AM. |

delete the internet gateway connection and just set the computer to the same workgroup and to connect to the internet through the lan, you do not have to do anything else.

2 xp pro machines?
your internet connection - DSL? On the machine that is working -on the internet- does it have an ip address?or does it get one automatically? if it gets one autmatically set the other machine to obtain ip address automatically. if your modem is connected to a wired hub, once the ip settings on your mates machine are acquired the right way ...and in the IE internet properties be sure to have "never dial a connection" selected in the connections tab, you should be fine. Thats about it...for now ![]() Dob |

Thanks
I got it working simply by using some commandline tests and commands.
I flushed dns, released and renewed ipconfig, and its now working... However, I've noticed there are some worm/virus problems, and don't want to put him in the same workgroup anymore. So I changed his workgroup, but the internet is still working for him, but HOPEFULLY, this will help prevent the spread of worms over my computers. Thanks for the input, you two! |

Well, I'm back again. I discovered a few virii/trojans on his comp, so I started removal processes... and now the internet is not working that well. I tried the same stuff I did before (ipconfig commands to /flushdns, /registerdns, /release and /renew) before I went to bed last night, and was unsuccessful. I also tried XPWinsock Fix and LSP Fix. This morning, I was able however to DL the newest AVG update. So it may or may not be fully functional. However, I do want to fix and clarify a few things.

SO: Here's what I want to Know! HOW do I delete Internet Gateway on his computer? Why did the Internet Gateway not show up in Safe Mode with Networking, yet still allow me to go online and DL things? |

I think I got Internet GAteway on the way out.
I found out how to turn off the gateway, I think.
Go to add and remove programs-> Add/remove windows components-> Networking services->and uncheck Internet Gateway Device discovery and control client. I'll try that after I finish virus scanning around here. |
