netbios name resolving issue
hello guys,
i have a question. im having an issue with my laptop on my network where if i ping a netbios name it immediatly says it cant be resolved, it doesnt even try to broadcast the search... the other computers on my network are fine, except they cant ping my laptop my netbios name either. pinging by ip works fine. netbios over tcp ip is enabled, all the computers are windows xp i have windows firewall disabled and the firewalloverride registry entry set to 1. can anyone tell me whats going on? |

ok, so i now have it so that i can actually browse the network and all the netbios names are displayed there and nbstat has a list of the netbios names and their correct IP addresses.
but i still cant ping their address, which also means i cant use programs that depand on netbios names. whats strange is that its as though the computer doesnt even try to find the name, it just decides its not there. |

As a test, install NetBEUI. If you are using XP, you will need the CD.

ok, i installed netbeui on both my pc and laptop.
still neither can ping the other by netbios name, ping by ip still works. and the laptop still doesnt even try to resolve the name, it just immeditaly comes up with the "Ping request could not find host jaycomp. Please check the name and try again." error. and still, if i wait long enough, the computers do appear in network neighborhood on my laptop, and they are accesable, but still un pingable. and once they are displayed in windows network, i can also see them in nbtstat -c. if i do nbtstat -r it displays that 0 names have been resolved by broadcast and 0 names have been resolved by name server. also, the second i finished installing netbeui on my desktop i got a duplicate name error, i checked the event log but it doesnt give info on what computer its conflicting with, though im sure its the laptop. the desktop is named jaycomp, the laptop is named wpilaptop. both use the same user name to log in. both are in differnt workgroups. |

Do you have the computer name in your lmhosts file? I am not sure if that wil make a difference, but I had to add the name when trying to file share on my two computers overs netbios.

no, my lmhosts files are empty.
i suppose i could add the entries. but this is netbios, its designed to automaticly broadcast for names of computers on the same subnets, and usually works fine 99.99% of the time. |

this morning when i booted my desktop, i got the duplicate name error again, checking the event log on the laptop yeilds
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\Nbf_{074DF431-2D80-4E3A-90B3-A5619626182C} because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start. Last edited by q2418130103p; 09-12-2005 at 02:45 PM. |

I fixed the problem.
I decided to check the resolution order that netbios was set to. (the dhcpnodetype entry in the registry) it was set to peer to peer because of my network at school. turns out that when i went on the wireless at school, it chagned my node type so i wasnt able to make broadcasts for netbios names. and when i went home, even though it was a dhcp setting, it still stayed. now my only issue is that i have to change that key everytime i go home... thanx for the help, jay |
