Hi
If I but a SMC barricade, can I share my cable modem connection without setting up a LAN. The reason for this is because if I set up a LAN one computer will have to be on all the time as long as I want to use the other computer to surf the net. What I want is to be able to use any computer at anytime without having the main computer on to surf the net. Is that what the barricade router does? Please help me with this one because I am very confused. Thanks |

Yes, the router will maintain a connection 24/7, even if both computers are turned off. As soon as your machines boot, they'll have a net connection ready to go.

So does that mean one computer (either one) can be turned on and still access the net?
Thanks |

Both computers will be able to simultaneously access the net. The router will take the IP address that your ISP assigns to you, and provide internal IPs to your machines behind it, however many they are.
For surfing and downloading and such, both of your machines can do that stuff simultaneously with no problems at all. The only thing that probably won't be able to occur is the seamless playing of bandwidth intensive 3D games simultaneously. For instance I have three machines here for the summer, and my brother and I can both surf and download and such with no problems. We can't both play Unreal online at the same time, though. Basically the router becomes a server that distributes bandwidth to your computers. It's a standalone device, and as long as it's turned on and plugged in your computers will have a net connection.
