Dynamic IP?
I recently got Roadrunner, which I believe is cable internet. My IP appears to be static, but I wish for it to be dynamic. I've been told by just unplugging the modem and waiting it will reassign an IP, but I've had no luck.
Is there a way to make my IP change? I've looked online for a bit but only find info on proxies, but don't wish to go that route. Any help? Also, what is your views on having a dynamic IP and static IP? I'm running on Windows XP with a wireless WRT54GS router. |

You can try the Dos commands. Sorry, but I don't remember what those are; I'm sure someone else here does, though.

DOS for changing manually is
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew But I think that router has a changing subnet mask, if I remember correctly, and why do you want to have a changing IP, you can protect your wireless by encrypting it. I only change my ip when I feel like my internet is uber slow for no reason.

The IP address the rest of the world see's(from your router to the net) can't be changed as far as i know, the ISP sets that up. Now the IP in your own network (from your router to the computers) can be pretty much anything you want.
Unless you do a lot of remote management on other systems then I would set static IP's, if not let windows do it... go dynamic |

Well I want to change it for a few reasons. My wireless network is not very secure because my Wifi card is old. After many, many drivers/downloads it still doesn't recognize WPA encryption, so I still use WEP. I feel safer gaming, surfing, posting, etc with a dynamic IP. Or at least changing it regularly.
If I want to change it though dos though it's as easy as ipconfig - renew? |

I would also like a dynamic over static address, but my limited understanding is that it's set by your provider either way.

If your behind a router and the IP address the router gets from them is static then you would have to work with them to change that, and probably are stuck keeping a static IP. Don't worry about the IP address of the PC 's that are behind that router though cause to the internet they are irrevelant and can not be seen. I personally see no good reason the use DHCP in a small home network, just takes longer to boot up the PC with DHCP and is 1 more potential problem. I also like static so when I look in the routers log I know exactly which PC is which in the list..

Mine RR IP address stays the same for at least 3 months, then changes randomly. Go figure.
