Attached the Ethernet cable from the Cable Modem to the WAN port on the router. Plug a computer into one of the four LAN ports on the router using a regular Ethernet cable.

The TV cable goes to the modem.
The modem has a wire to the router. The router has either a wire connecting to the computer, or it communicates with the wireless adapter, either usb or a pci card. Trying to setup a Residential Gateway can be real hard and can take a long time, even for people that know what they are doing. You're going the easiest way. It's the same method I use.

unplug the modem and the router, turn off the computer.
plug the modem in after 30 seconds, wait for the lights to stop blinking. might take about 45 seconds. plug the router in, wait for the lights to stop blinking. turn on the computer. see if you have internet. if not, netgear, and tell them what you just purchased and that you need help getting it set up. |

I don't think you need the serial number, just the model. You should be able to get that information from the box or the booklet. You did keep those things, right?

The serial number of the router correct? It should be somewhere on the router. Look around for something like S/N: ABCD1234

There's no numbers at all?
EDIT: Wait, I have the same router as you...let me see if I can find it on mine... OK, there's a sticker on the back. It says SERIAL, then next to it is a barcode. Under that is a number. I believe that is the serial number. Last edited by blue60007; 10-15-2005 at 08:31 PM. |

Hook the modem back up directly to the PC, make sure everything works. I'm assuming the modem is connected to the Ethernet adapter. Open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG/ALL . Look for the Ethernet adapter, note the MAC address (it's listed as Physical Address), and write it down. It will look like 00-00-01-AB-7C-52 or something similar. Reconnect the router, log into its setup interface, and look for the MAC CLONE utility. Use that MAC you wrote down.

In the mac address filtering box, there needs to be the MAC address of every pc/laptop on the network. Otherwise the router wont let you connect.

r u sure?
it said that u should enter the MAC adress only if u want other PCs in ur house to share ur connection, but if u want it to be an open connection, then dont enable the MAC filtering. |

Log into the router control panel. Find Advanced > Wireless Settings. Then hit "Setup Access List". And if "Turn Access Control On" is checked off, uncheck it.

Sometimes your privider will change your address and you may have to restart your computer, or even unplug your router for a minute.
Once in awhile you may have to unplug your modem for a minute. I have to do this about once a month or so. |
