Wireless Connection will not connect
Hello --- my daughter has a DELL Dimension laptop. 3.0 ghz with internal wireless card. She lives in a house with 3 other girls, and all 4 have laptops. They have CABLE INTERNET from ComCast, and a NET GEAR ROUTER (the model that works at 108 mbs. It is 4 months old.)
Everything was perfectly fine for 4 months for everyone. 2 days ago, my daughter could not connect to the internet. The little terminal icons in the taskbar had a red "X" through them. She made NO CHANGES to her computer, and the other 3 girls still connect just fine. Every once in a while, the "X" disappears, but she is connected for a very short time, and at a speed of 54 mbs, then dropping to 24 mbs and then the red "X" appears again, and she is not conected. Any ideas on what may have happened and what the fix may be? Please keep any ideas simple for newbies at this... Thanks! |

Does she run virus scans, and spyware scans often? Did she install any new programs that could be blocked by a firewall which might also be blocking the internet?

Have her check to make sure that she does not have two firewalls running first off. If that's not it try resetting the router as per manufacturers recommendations. There will eitehr be a reset button or if not just unplug for a few minutes. If that still doesn't work unplug the modem for about ten minutes to reset it and then reboot the router and computers using it. Worst comes to worst she can connect the modem directly to a pc using, ethernet not usb, and see if there is connectivity. That way she'll know if it is the router or not. Hope this helps. If I left anything out some one help me out.

Did the virus check --- it was clean.
Did the power cycle thing and still coulf not connect. The other 3 people can connect fine. I had her connect directly to the modem, and she could NOT connect! So, it may be some other setting??? |

Well, it was getting late and I felt daring, so I tried something that worked on other hardware items. Through the DEVICE MANAGER, I uninstalled the wireless card and rebooted. Windows detected it on reboot and reinstalled it. After that, everything worked fine again...Go figure...
Thanks again for the help |
