Networking issues...
I am currently running two different computers in our home, on a wireless ethernet (I believe that is the term) which runs on cable modem.
Initially my questions where going to pertain to the networking, but I thought I would first ask about the safe operation of keeping out virus's and other problematic issues, as to whether I should have specific changes to my wireless software options? I do run a firewall, have Norton Antivirus, along with Spysweeper and other utilities, and have no problems, but do realize that I may have my settings so that others can use my system if they had a computer close enough to my wireless ethernet. Is there a setting that I can "set" so that others cannot use my system, yet I could still be able to network inside my own home freely? I'm not even sure where to start at looking for options on making these changes, so perhaps if someone knows how to go about this, it would be helpful as well! Secondly, my question on "networking" is that if both computers in my home are powered up, I can see the drives (from looking on either computer) but only have the ability to basically see what is there. If I try to download from one computer to the next, I can only copy to the direct C drive...not any particular folder I wish to add to, or any other drive, as I get a message regarding "not being the administrator" or something similar? I would like to openly copy, move, delete, make folders etc. on either computer, from either computer with no issues, which I'm unable to do as mentioned? Is there an easier way of seeing what is on the opposite computer I am using, other than going through the multiple clicking of going into "MY COMPUTER"...and then "My Network Places", then continuing to click to what I want? I'm just wondering if I could somehow have an icon on my desktop that takes me to the "other" computer, where I can then manipulate to what I am looking for completely without issues? I've also noted if I go into Windows Explorer, while trying to get to certain areas of the other computer, I run into the same "not the administrator" problems, so I believe I need to rectify this issue before getting anywhere anyway? Any information on figuring out "networking" to run smoothly would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much. I will mention, both computers are Pentium 4 computers, both upgraded within the last year, with plenty of resources. Dale |

I don't use a wireless network, but this article seems to have all the information you're looking for... to keep others from "piggy-backing": http://www.quepublishing.com/article...?p=339052&rl=1
Making a folder accessible is easy - Just right click on the folder in Explore and then select "Sharing and Security". A dialog box will open, and you can select options such as "Allow network users to change my files". To get to a place on the other computer, I'd suggest mapping a drive to a folder you want to access often. It's more convenient, and the network will respond faster. To map a location select the tools menu in explore, then "Map Network Drive". Choose a letter and browse to the location. then Finish. This will now show up under "my computer". You can right-click and select "create shortcut" if you want a shortcut to it on your desktop. Heather Mc |
