Need help with a router/modem problem

I just got DSL yesterday from Quest and I am trying to hook up a router to wire my Xbox and my own PC to the Internet. The DSL guy told me that the modem serves also as a wireless router and that I would need to disable the DHCP on my router for it to work with the modem. So I did that and it still didnt work. If anyone has any ideas I am very open to any suggestions. I am going for wired networking in my house not wireless.

My router is a DLink Model No: DI-604
The DSL modem is an ActionTech.

In my experience the DCHP in DSL modems is usually not very reliable. You can bypass it by doing the following:
1. Connect your computer directly to the DSL modem.
2. Go to the modem config pages (I get to mine by going http://launchmodem).
3. Change the mode to "Bridged Ethernet."
4. Save changes and restart the modem.
5. Plug the router into the modem and your computer to the router.
6. Go to the router config pages.
7. Change the mode to "PPPoE" (or whatever service your ISP provides).
8. Assign your login credentials if applicable.
9. Save changes and restart your router.

Your router should be acting as the DHCP server now.
