Urgent networking help required

I have an ethernet cable and two laptops. The first is an old toshiba connected to a printer, internet and an external dvd burner. The second is an acer ferrari connected to nothing. And i have to transfer all my files across from the toshiba to the acer by midday tommorow, meaning i have to heve the network ste up immediatly. But i dont know how, so can anyone help me please.

Unless the Ethernet cable is a crossover cable, you are going to have problems. You need a crossover cable to directly connect two computers together without using something in between like a hub or a switch.

step #1: make sure that both PC's have ethernet cards
step #2: make sure that both PC's are in the same workgroup ande IP addresses are in the same subnet
step #3: make sure that you have a crossover cable
step #4: connect both PC's
step #5: set up file sharing on both pc's

then go ahead and copy the files from drive to drive.

ok, i have managed to share the hd, now what about the files on my toshiba?

from the destination laptop, copy the files from the source laptop to the destination laptop.
