im having an ip conflict

I have 3 computers 2 of them running xp pro and the 3rd running win98SE. I have them hooked up to a linksys befsr41 router and its hooked up to roadrunner internet. The xp machines work the best when its just those 2 hooked up but when i plug in the 98 machine, i get system errors that show up on my xp machine saying theres an ip address conflict and a error window on the 98 machine that wont go away. I not really sure how to change the ip address so that it wont conflict without the internet not working on that machine.so i need to find a way for the ip address to automatically configure so that the network and internet will work without conflict.

If you can access your router settings (by typing in your routers ip in the address bar) you should enable DHCP, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, and this will automatically assign the IP adresses of the computers connected to it.

The easiest way to do this is reset the router to factory defaults - then make sure all 3 computers are set to obtain IP address automatically.

Is there a particular reason you need to use static local IP addresses?

That's unusual - factory default on a Linksys is 50 DHCP clients.

Yes, I know. I have 2 of them myself and have installed about 50 of them over the past few years. Someone must have reconfigured it.
