Cool Newbie to Networking

With your help I will learn this. One simple question; with two 10/100 ethernet cards installed and configured with PnP, do I need a hub to connect them?

you do not need a hub in this case, you need a crossover cable (can get from your local computer store).

If you plan on connecting more than just these 2 machines then a hub would be a better choice.

Right, and if you want to share a DSL/Cable connection, then the best route to go is a router.

No - you can get a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL router with a 4 port 10/100 switch built in for $129. Your cable or DSL "modem" must have an Ethernet output to use this.
