Configure DLink DI-774 wireless router as WAP

Can a DLink DI-774 wireless router be configured in such a way that it simply acts as a wireless access point? If so, how is this done? I've been fiddling around with it, and no matter how I try to configure the WAN, LAN, and DHCP settings, before I can get it working I get disconnected from the router and I have to do a hard reset to get it to a state where I can connect again (of course, I am connected by a wire). If it can't be used in this way, no biggie.

Reset the router to factory defaults. Do not connect anything to the WAN/Internet port. Plug a computer set to use DHCP into a switch port. Log into it, set up the wireless the way you want, set it for dynamic IP, turn off its DHCP server, then change its internal IP to one in your main router's subnet but outside of its DHCP scope. When you apply this last change, you will lose access. Unplug the computer, restart the router, then connect it to your main router using a SWITCH port.

It's been a while since I had a chance to work on this. I'm a bit confused as you when you say "set it for dynamic IP, turn off its DHCP server, then change its internal IP to one in your main router's subnet but outside of its DHCP scope" Where do I set the dynamic IP? The setup for this router has three sections: WAN, LAN, and DHCP. I can manually set the WAN and LAN IP addresses, and I can turn off DHCP, but I'm unsure of how to get it set up exactly.

I have the WAN address set for dynamic, the LAN address is manually entered, and DHCP is off. It will work sometimes but not other times.

That's how you do it. Is the LAN address in the right subnet and out of the main router's DHCP scope? Is it uplinked to the main router using a switch port? You do NOT use the WAN/Internet port. Can you plug a wired computer into one of the other switch ports and pull a proper IP?

Yes, it is linked to the router using a switch port. Connecting a computer to another switch port pulls a proper IP address and everything works. Connecting wirelessly will pull an IP address hit-or-miss. When it does pull an IP address, it will sometimes be unable to ping the default gateway.

Thanks for your help on this.

I think all you need to do now is tweak the wireless settings.
