Network setup

A home network with two computers connected through a cable modem via a router is my working system.
I am going to set up a neighbour with a similar setup.
However, unlike mine, their cable modem is USB, so I am wondering how the remote computer can connect in if the USB modem is elswhere in the house.
A network cable will come from it to the router, but I cannot see it being necessary or desirable to run a USB cable through walls and downstairs.
Also for the neighbour to connect to the modem, she has the USB software installed. I cannot see this being necessary for the remote computer if a USB cable is not used.
I will be setting the network so that each computer can connect to the internet without the other one being on, which is how mine is setup and working.

I would be very grateful for any help.

They need to exchange their USB cable modem for an Ethernet model. Then you can use a standard router setup.

Unless I am missing something, you surely need to replace your neighbour's USB modem with a wireless dsl modem/router - very cheap now - and install wireless adaptors in the computers.

Unfortunately, the modem is supplied by the cable company, and I do not think that they will replace it, with one like mine.

Thank you.

Then they have to buy their own compatible cable modem and router or combo modem/router to do any independent networking. You can use an Ethernet card in each machine and connect them with a crossover cable and share the connection using ICS, but they won't be independent - the "host" machine must be on and connected.
