PSP/Wireless modems

I am completely new to wirless networking but need to set up to play PSP online. However, i am currently using a USB modem supplied by ISp and a huge extension cable as my phone socket is about 15 metres away, My extension cable won't let me use a microfilter so whenever the phone goes and I answer, my connection cuts.

So, I want to set-up a wireless connection to my PC first and foremost but I don't know how this works. Do you have your modem next to the phone socket and a wireless card in your PC to collect the signal?

When I have this working, what do I need to get the PSP working online? I asked the question in the gaming forum and it seems I need the wireless router but I thought I could just connect to my PC with a wireless point and then use ICS.

Anyway, maybe this is not as complicated as I am making it sound but what I need is:

No wires to my telephone socket
PSP connected wirelessly to the network
(and maybe in future Xboxx 360 on wireless network)

The most streamlined and of course cheapest way to do this is what I am after. Any help would be appreciated as I am a bit of a thicko on this whole wireless thing.

btw, I have tried to research this but have come up with nothing so far

Thats sounds like a strange setup you have, my broadband connection comes via an extension cable with the telephone wire connecting to a wireless router that has an internal USB modem. My main PC is connected to the wireless router via ethernet cable and my other PC's and laptop connect via the wireless function to the router. My telephone does not get disconnected though so i am confused as to why your extension does not allow a microfilter to be used. Basically you dont use ICS but setup the other PC's to access the router either using WEP or WPA security. You access the router by typing in the IP address which takes you to a user friendly GUI setup screen. My router cost me £65 which included a USB adapter for my laptop, wireless cards cost around £25. Don't play games so an not faniliar with PSP.

Perhaps I should just start with a wireless modem to get over the cable extension/distance to telephone socket then try and factor in the PSP later. Still non the wiser but i think I am gonna get a wireless router/modem and see how that goes...

Okay, so I took the plunge. i bought a Linksys WAG54GS Gateway and WUSB54GS network adaptor as advised by PC World (yes I know but I am on vacation and didn't have time to wait for one to be delivered).

Anyway, I now have a wirless network but it is terrible. It will drop out when it feels like it (signal strength seems to be about 65%) and playing online games is impossible - connection interupted every 5 seconds causing extreme unplayable lag.

My question is do you think I have it set-up wrong or is it the fact that the router is next to the phone socket, around a corner, through a wall about 5 meters away.

Any advice appreciated as I need to take the equipment back if my house just isn't wired for wireless (as it were!). My main use of internet is online games so i need a solid fast connection (something the PC World bod told me I would get with this equipment ).

Even with wireless they recommend that your main PC is connected to the router via ethernet cable with the rest of the PC's wireless.Connected via cable is important during setup as you have a good solid connection. i use my laptop (wirelessly) around the house upstairs and downstairs and don't have a problem. Unless your house is built like a fortress wireless should be good for 200ft or so, you can actually reduce this settings in the router setup. I have found that if i don't use external power on my laptop then there is sometimes a problem but not always. I would recheck your settings, download the user manual and make sure your firmware is up tp date on the router. This can be checked at the Linksys website.

Success! Linksys tech support told me it could be my wireless telephone interfering so I turned it off and my wireless internet connection worked brilliantly. The best part though, is that when I turned the telephone back on, it must have changed channels itself as my connection stayed fast and stable.

The only problem is, I think I somehow changed the password when I set-up the router so can't reach the admin page - or get my PSP online. I'm gonna have to re-set but at least I know it works now.
