using the same modem for different comcast accounts

This is a brief summary of my situation. I bought a cable modem and got comcast at my apartment. cancelled comcast after my 6 month deal. Moved to a house with a friend, decided to get comcast. My roommate but comcast in his name, so we could get a deal for new users. We are using the same modem from my apartment. There is an internet connection from it, but when we try to us the account start up cd we get a error. So we called comcast they said the problem was that the modem was registered to my old account and that they have to come out tomorrow and see if the modem is a "comcast ready", and that if it isnt they will charge us 50 bucks. I am pretty sure that they will. So i guess i want to know if there is anything i can do?...... besides have comcast come over.

Modems "must" be registered with comcast. They should be able to do it over the phone without charging you.

I don't know how comcast works, but when I turned in my charter supplied modem, and bought a linksys all I did was call charter's tech support and give them the modems MAC address, and all was good. No house call, no service charge.
