ip

yesterday I suspected my neighbor had been downloading large files on my wireless. after confronting the neighbor about the issue, i found out he downloaded some web creator software and "the ip was recorded" according to him (i suppose he tried to register it and they caught him). i already knew he was using my internet for email (we are friends), but i didnt know he was doing anything illegal or downloading large files. i have since blocked him, but now i'm worried about legal action for his stupidity.

should i expect this to be taken to court or do authorities only go after the big offenders? the software company has my IP, whats stopping them from coming down on me for his actions?

let me know what you think

I think the chances of anyone coming after you are very remote. People that run the servers that distribute the software are the targets... usually not the people downloading.

It's best though to keep your wireless connection protected, so you have nothing to worry about.

I doubt anything bad will happen. However, this is a lesson as to why wireless networks need to be password protected.

Honestly, since I have never heard of this happening, I have no idea how it would work.

All this company has, if they have anything at all, is your IP address. There is no way to identify you using just an IP address without going to your ISP. Your ISP is not going to give out your personal information without a very compelling reason, such as a court order. Such a large hassle is not worth it financially to a company that in reality hasn't really lost anything of value.

Companies only go through all this trouble for serious offenders or real crimes.
