Veriozn DSL, 6100 modem with Netgear WR614 router

Yesterday, I was having trouble installing the netgear router because the verizon westell 6100 modem is a modem/router. Once I talked to tech support they instructed me on how to use the modem as a bridge and let the netgear do the DHCP etc.. Also, I ditched Windows 2000 and we just loaded Windows Xp pro so I have some questions. I prefer not to use the verizon software so once I got the modem and router cooperating I just turned on the machine and was able to connect to the internet instantly. I thought that I had to use PPPOE instead and put in their verizon username and password but I did not have to. Does anyone see a problem for this in the future? In the router utility I have "ISP DOES NOT REQUIRE A LOG IN" ticked and so far so good. Anyone have a similar experience with verizon. Should I just leave it alone? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like you have the modem in the PPPoE mode without routing function - that should work fine. In that mode, the login is stored in the modem and it passes one real IP address to the output - which your router sees as a standard dynamic IP connection, just like a cable modem.

SBC's Speedstream 5100B modems are tri-mode - full router, PPPoE, and pure bridge. Sounds like yours is similar.

Thanks GLC. Just a bit worried since it took me forever to get the modem and router to work together. What I did was turn the PC off and then hook up the modem and router in the normal configuration and powered them both on. With both of them powered and wired, I reset the modem and it automatically detected the netgear router and adjusted itself to be a bridge. This is what the tech at verizon told me and at first I thought he was just telling me that to get me off the phone. Surely enough it works, so the Westell 6100 modem has the ability to detect a configuration and adjust settings accordingly to either modem/router or just modem.

So, you see no probs leaving it just the way it is and forgeting about the bloat software from verizon?

Since the logon is stored in the modem what happens if I have to power cycle it or is it stored regardless of power?

Thanks for help

I dunno - I do know that standard routers store it through power cycles, they only lose the login if you do a hard reset.

Thats what I was thinking since I did a couple of power cycles just to test. My brother wanted to add the router so that he could play his PSP online with other players. Unfortunalty at this time PSP only supports WEP encryption. He has no other use for the wireless capabilities so what I did was use MAC filters and he is going to enable and disable the wireless when he wants to play. A small setback but it only takes a minute to log into the router and asjust settings. Thanks for all your help
