Need to open ports
I need to open the ports on my computer for bitorrent. They are stealth, I think that means they are firewalled, but I do not have any firewalls or routers. How do I open these ports? Please help. And are there any tricks to get faster download speeds for bitorrent?
Have windows xp home edition |

Have you tried running the application yet?? Without any software firewalls, or a router the app should just work cause it will control the port.. Looking in Windows help, the only way shown is in Windows firewall to oen or close ports, but if you have that turned off, as I said the app should work..

if you dont have a firewall or router then it will be up to your ISP to sort the ports out for you, although come to think of it, most ISP's open most ports anyway to stop the customers complaining they cant download anything, if you could do me a favor,
click start click run type cmd then press enter then type ipconfig if you see something like this Quote:
if the ip address is something like 86.45.23.67 then you have a direct connection to the net, also can i ask how you connect to the internet, cable or ADSL, if you dont know cable has a thick wire coming in the wall, ADSL usually plugs into your phone line with a filter. MattyG |

ktkendall, bitorrent does work but I think that if my ports are not stealth than I will get much faster downloads.
bob man uk I did what you asked and I got Connection-specific DNS Suffix : hsd1.va.comcast.net. IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 69.143.xxx.xxx Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 69.143.xxx.xxx and I connect to the internet by cable but I do not think I have a router, anyways what do I do now to open the ports. yeah its a direct connection to the net, you will have to ask your ISP,but only if you are sure you arent getting the full potential of bittorrent, i still managed to hit a good 20kbps without port forwarding (i have a router) and 30kbps with, it all really depends on who is seeding the download you are trying to get and at what time, it may be that you are getting the best you can.

So what about the stealth results I get when I run those port tests, doesn't stealth mean that my ports are firewalled, if yes how do I open them?
Thanks to everyone. Last edited by MP79; 01-02-2006 at 09:12 AM. |

Are you sure you have the Windows XP firewall turned off? It has a builtin firewall.
I'm going to edit your post so your IP isn't out there inviting hackers. As soon as you drop your firewall, the whole world can get into your computer. |

The modem shouldn't be doing anything.
What security and antivirus apps do you have installed? If it's XP SP2 (which it should be) what does Windows Security Center have to say about the monitored apps? |
