Problem installing router.

Hey technicians!
I have a problem installing my Linksys EtherFast/Dsl Router (BEFSR41). When I go to install cd it checks if I have an active connection to internet and prompts me: "The computer is not connected to internet! Check your internet connection". I am connected to the internet through DSL modem though.
My OS is Windows xp home ed. I had it before and could install it without this problem so my internet connection must be corrupted. How can I fix it?
I really need your help. tx

You don't need the CD. Just open a browser and surf to http://192.168.1.1 - the login name leave blank, password is admin. It's not going to see an Internet connection because of the PPPoE and login required - you will set the router to PPPoE and store your login.

I did what you suggested glc and I could't connect to internet. How should I troubleshoot it now?

Which exact DSL modem do you have and who is your ISP?

It is a SpeedStream dsl modem and the isp is SBC yahoo. I was thinking of installing dsl modem again and starting from scratch. What do you think?

Try resetting the router and then going into the configuration utility and setting up your internet access again. No need to reset dsl modem. Also make sure that you are using the cable that came with your modem to hook-up to your router.

Okay. The 5360 is a straight bridge modem. Connect it to the router, connect the router to your PC. Do a hard reset on the modem like this - unplug the power to the router, find the reset button, hold it in with a paperclip, plug in the router while holding the button in and keep holding the button for 30 seconds. Reboot your PC and open a browser, surf to http://192.168.1.1 - leave the login name blank, the password is admin .

On the main setup page, choose PPPoE for connection type, enter your username and password (in username@sbcglobal.net format), set it to Keep Alive, and save the settings. You should be all set. You do NOT want to install any of the SBC connection manager software on the computer or set up a broadband connection - with a router it's a straight standard TCP/IP network connection. If you have the connection manager installed, uninstall it. If you have a broadband connection already installed in network connections, uninstall it. All you need is the "local area connection".

I did the hard reset like you said glc but it didn't help. I think the problem is lying somewhere deeper since when I even use the Linksys installation disk it doesn't recognize that I'm connected to the internet. Tomorrow I will reinstall the dsl modem installation software. Thanks for your help.

No, you do NOT need any modem installation software unless it's USB - and if that's the case, you can't use the router anyway.

Power off the modem, router, and PC. Connect the phone line to the DSL jack on the modem, connect the Ethernet jack from the modem to the router, use the WAN port on the router, use a standard straight CAT5 patch cord. Connect another standard patch cord from port 1 on the router to the PC's Ethernet jack. Power up the modem and let it go through its sync process, when the DSL light is steady green (takes about 30 seconds) then power up the router. Then power up the PC and log into the router. Can you log into the router? If so, do the PPPoE setup. If you cannot log into the router, do another hard reset, reboot the computer, and try again. If the DSL light on the modem is flashing, you don't have sync. If it's off, there's no DSL on that phone jack. If the WAN link light is off on the router, the router doesn't see the modem. If the light or lights for Port 1 on the router aren't on, the router doesn't see the PC. If either of the last 2 are the case, try different cables. If the DSL light is not steady green on the modem, call SBC. You should have 3 steady green lights and a flickering activity light on a properly operating modem which sees something on its Ethernet port (i.e. the router). If any RED light is lit on the router, it has an internal error.

I did exactly that, all the lights act as they should, everything seems fine-I just cannot connect to the internet for some strange reason. When I tried it the second time, something happened to my router because the red diag light on the wan port stays on all the time and doesn't want to turn off, even after the hard reset. I will try again tommorow... any comments welcome

If the red diag light stays on, the router is toasted. Call Linksys.
